Advancing Soil Science for a Sustainable Future

Bridging the gap between research and practice to ensure national food security.

The Nepalese society of Soil Science (NSSS) is the premier professional organization dedicated to the scientific management and conservation of Nepal’s soil resources. Established in 1991 by a pioneering group of soil scientists, the Society underwent a significant revival in 2014-015, following a two-decade hiatus. This resurgence took place at the Soil Science Division of the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), making a renewed commitment to addressing Nepal’s evolving agricultural and environmental challenges.

The NSSS serves as a collaborative hub for soil science professionals across academia, government, and the private sector. By bridging the gap between research and practice, the society advocates for sustainable soil management to combat fertility decline and erosion.
Beyond policy influence, NSSS is dedicated to knowledge dissemination-ensuring that advanced soil technologies reach both educators and farmers. Furthermore, the Society fosters international partnerships and seeks to harmonize soil analysis standards across public and private laboratories to ensure data reliability nationwide.

We believe that in the long run, society should play a proactive role in: i) knowledge transfer; ii) digital and visual awareness regarding soil utilization and conservation; and iii) community level extension and demonstration across various impact areas between soil health and food security nexus in the country.
